US Tycoon Ranks First in UK Super Casino List
American billionaire Philip Anschutz wins in the first round of judging in the race to build Britain's first super casino with his Millennium Dome bet.
The casino tycoon's Greenwich bid bagged the top spot in the ranking that the Casino Advisory Panel came out with July 24. This is despite the controversy surrounding his involvement with embattled Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.
Philip Anschutz is the owner of the Dome, and Prescott has been under fire and is pelted with accusations that has wielded political influence to gain favors for the Dome. He has been put under parliamentary investigation due to his stay at the Colorado ranch of Anschutz.
The site is in Greenwich, a borough in greater London. Glasgow placed second in the list, while Blackpool, the bookies favorite and a popular resort destination in northwest England placed third.
The Casino Advisory Panel will still be conducting further testing, and the final recommendation will be given to the government by December. The panel likewise said that succeeding assessments would not be affected by the first.
Prescott has issued denials over the accusations that he has been unduly influenced by Anschutz during their eight meetings.
Prescott claimed that they had never discussed casino matters, and that he was not directly involved in decisions regarding casinos policies.
